Seven-seat cars are expensive, and that is exactly where Chinese brands are undercutting the established names hardest. You can now get a seven-seat plug-in hybrid SUV for around £34,000 and a seven-seat petrol SUV for under £30,000. Here are the options, what the third row is really like, and which to choose.

Best value: MGS9

The MGS9 is the pick for most families. For around £34,000 you get seven seats, a plug-in hybrid system that can cover about 62 miles on electricity, and a five-star Euro NCAP rating. With all seven seats in use the boot holds 332 litres, rising to over 1,000 litres with the third row folded. MG’s large dealer network is a bonus.

Cheapest: Chery Tiggo 8

The Tiggo 8 starts at £28,545 with a petrol engine, making it one of the cheapest seven-seaters of any brand. The third row is best for children, and with all seats up the boot is tiny, at 117 litres. A plug-in hybrid version is available from £33,545.

Most luxurious: Jaecoo 8 and Chery Tiggo 9

The Jaecoo 8 and Tiggo 9 are large, plush plug-in hybrid SUVs with electric ranges over 80 miles. They compete with cars like the Kia Sorento and Skoda Kodiaq on size but come with more equipment. Both are priced over £40,000, so they pay the expensive car supplement on car tax. See our car tax guide.

Fully electric seven-seaters

If you want a seven-seat EV, the Chinese options are people carriers rather than SUVs. The Maxus MIFA 9 is a large electric MPV, although What Car? rated it among the weaker Chinese cars. The XPeng X9 is a high-tech luxury MPV priced from £74,990, and BYD’s Denza D9 is due in the UK. The Tesla Model Y is also now available with seven seats, from £54,490.

What to check in a seven-seater

  • Third-row space: sit in it yourself. In most seven-seat SUVs, the back row is for children or short trips.
  • Boot with all seats up: it can be tiny, as in the Tiggo 8.
  • Isofix points: check how many child-seat mounts there are and where.
  • Insurance: get quotes before buying. See our insurance groups guide.
  • Warranty: Chery and Jaecoo offer seven years and 100,000 miles. See our warranty comparison.
