Chinese Car Warranties Compared: Every UK Brand in 2026

Last checked September 2026 against each brand’s UK warranty terms.

A long warranty is one of the main reasons people take a chance on a newer Chinese brand. The good news is that several of them now match or beat Kia’s seven years. The bad news is that the small print varies a lot, from how many miles are covered to how long you get free roadside assistance. Here is every Chinese brand on sale in the UK, compared like for like.

How they compare with the established brands

BrandCar warrantyBattery warranty
Kia7 years / 100,000 miles8 years (70% health)
Hyundai5 years / unlimited miles8 years / 100,000 miles
Toyota3 years / 60,000 miles, extendable to 10 years with dealer servicingUp to 10 years on EVs with health checks
Tesla4 years / 60,000 miles8 years / 100,000 to 150,000 miles (70% health)

Omoda, Jaecoo, Chery and Changan match Kia, the long-time benchmark. MG’s seven years is capped at 80,000 miles, which matters if you drive a lot. Leapmotor and XPeng are the weakest, and no better than many European brands.

The battery warranty matters most on an EV

On an electric car the battery is the most expensive part by far, so its warranty is the one to read closely. Every brand here covers it for eight years. What differs is the mileage limit and the health guarantee, which is usually 70%. That means the brand will repair or replace the battery if it falls below 70% of its original capacity during the warranty.

BYD is the standout. In January 2026 it raised its battery cover to 8 years or 155,000 miles, and backdated this to cars already on the road. That is one of the highest mileage limits of any brand in the UK. Changan Deepal is next at 124,000 miles.

The small print to check

Servicing

Almost every warranty requires the car to be serviced on time and to the maker’s schedule. Omoda and Jaecoo allow 30 days or 1,000 miles of leeway. Miss a service and a claim can be refused. UK law lets you use an independent garage without voiding the warranty, as long as it follows the schedule and uses the right parts. However, MG, Omoda, Jaecoo and Chery warranty terms refer to authorised dealers, so an independent service can lead to arguments over claims. You would also lose roadside cover that is renewed at each dealer service. Our servicing costs guide has the details.

Roadside assistance

This varies more than anything else. Omoda and Jaecoo give up to seven years of RAC cover and BYD gives six, while Chery gives just 12 months. MG’s one year of AA cover is renewed each time you service at an MG dealer.

Transferring to a new owner

MG, Omoda, Jaecoo, Chery and Changan warranties pass to the next owner, as long as the service history has been kept. That helps resale value. If you are buying used, ask for the service record and check the warranty start date.

Commercial use

If the car will be used for taxi or ride-hailing work, cover is often shorter. Omoda’s drops to 4 years / 80,000 miles and Changan’s to 3 years / 60,000 miles.

Which Chinese brand has the best warranty?

  • Best all-round: Omoda and Jaecoo, with 7 years / 100,000 miles and up to 7 years of roadside cover.
  • Best battery cover: BYD, with 8 years / 155,000 miles.
  • Best for high mileage in the first year: MG, which has no mileage limit in year one, but the 80,000-mile cap afterwards is lower than rivals.
  • Weakest: Leapmotor, at 4 years / 60,000 miles.

A warranty is only part of the picture. Insurance costs vary widely between these brands too, so see our guide to insurance groups for Chinese cars before you decide, and our depreciation guide for how well each one holds its value.

Frequently asked questions

Which Chinese car brand has a 7-year warranty?

Omoda, Jaecoo, Chery, Changan Deepal and MG all offer seven years. The first four cover 100,000 miles; MG covers 80,000 miles.

Is the BYD warranty transferable?

BYD says its warranty transfers to a new owner in most cases, as long as the car has been serviced to its schedule.

Does servicing at an independent garage void a Chinese car warranty?

UK competition law allows independent servicing if the schedule is followed and correct parts are used. But several Chinese brands refer to authorised dealers in their terms, and you may lose free roadside cover, so keep full itemised invoices.

What happens if my EV battery degrades?

If the battery falls below the guaranteed health, usually 70% of its original capacity, within the warranty period, the maker should repair or replace it.
